By Mike Merrett, Online Entreprenuer and Author

If you have been struggling to make money with your computer, this page will explain the critical mistakes you may be making with your home business.

There are three common mistakes that people make when they try to make money with their computers:

  • They buy a turnkey website
  • They pay money to promote products
  • They research to build the perfect business, but don't start
These mistakes cause people to fail almost every time.

To find out why these ways don't work, read on.

Read on to find out:

  • Why buying a turnkey website doesn't work
  • Why paying money to promote a product doesn't work
  • Why researching un-endingly to build the perfect business doesn't work

Once you read this entire page you will know how to avoid these mistakes. Your path to creating extra income with your computer will be freed up to focus on what works!

Why buying a turnkey website brings little to no money

You've probably seen them on late-night TV, offering your own money-making website that comes preloaded with 100's of items. It's all set up, it's a "turnkey" website. All you need to do is promote the site and rake in money. That's what the producers tell you.

You'd think a website selling 100's of items would work, but there are some hidden reasons why so many people fail with these sites.
  • They are selling items no one wants. How many people are currently looking for Bart Simpson mugs? Not many nowadays. In making money with a website, you want to offer things lots of people want now.
  • It costs much more money to market the website than the small profit they make. When the site does make a sale or two, the amount of money spent on marketing is much more than the profits made.
  • The competition has a trusted name. If you want to shop a site with 100's or 1000's of items, you can go to Walmart.com or amazon.com or other brands. You know if there's a problem, these brand-name companies have a history of making returns easy. Why trust some other unknown website?
  • There are hundreds of other sites just like this. The company that sold the store-in-a-box site offers this same arrangement to other aspiring entrepreneurs. They generate competition with each package they sell.
  • You might say, "There are thousands of McDonalds restaurants. They work." That's true, BUT they offer a proven formula for selling food. People want food! People know what they're getting at McDonalds and other franchises. They are clone-able.
If people don't want what you sell, if they are skeptical of your site, you're dead in the water.

Why paying to promote a product usually doesn't work

Some companies will require an up-front fee to sell their products. They give you a special link that they use to track your sales. After the fee, you'll make a commission on every sale that comes through your link.

This usually fails due to one of three reasons:
  1. People who sign up with these companies promote the link the company gives them. It is a usually long, obvious referral link. People shy away from clicking them, wondering if a virus will download onto their computer from this suspicious looking link.
  2. People underestimate the marketing effort needed to make sales. If you want to get your link in front of people, you'll either spend money or time.
  3. There are hundreds of other people who are promoting the company too. There's no reason for someone to buy through your link verses another person's link.

There is ONE situation where paying to promote DOES work: Signing up with reputable companies such as Tupperware, Mary Kay, Creative Memories, Avon or others can work. The difference is these companies rely on person-to-person selling. You build your business on your relationships with friends and friends of friends and new leads. If you're good at face-to-face selling, you have a chance at success with these direct selling companies.

At this point I feel I should mention this: There are thousands of companies who will pay a referral fee without charging anything. They are happy to have extra profits and understand they are rewarding someone who sends sales. All you need to do is sign up with their program for free and promote.

If you're looking for a hands-free, put-up-a-website-and-make-sales situation, why pay to promote when there are thousands of companies that don't require an upfront fee?
